Scholars 4 Jesus

Dolores Sangco-Villaflor (Scholarship Director)

Hello, This is John Jalique -
Founder and CEO of Scholars4Jesus
.

This week, I would like to express my appreciation to Sister Dolores, who has been our volunteer Scholarship Director since October 2010.  She serves diligently for the Lord by updating all our student records, keeping track of birthdays, sponsorships and posting beautiful pictures of our scholars on facebook who still need sponsors.   Her work goes beyond being our Scholarship Director, she is also a key person at all of our RAISE UP! concerts.

Dolores is someone whom we can always rely on for support and a smile when needed.   She is like a big sister to us and a mother to all the children in our Scholarship Program.

Thank you sis.

 Dolores Sangco-Villaflor
 Scholarship Director
USA

Maria Dolores Puno Sangco-Villaflor was born on March 26th, in Bulacan, Philippines.  Her parents are Paulina Gatbunton Puno (deceased) and Dominador Bulaon Sangco. Her whole family resides in San Juan , San Ildefonso, Bulacan, Philippines. Being the oldest among 9 siblings, she spent her childhood in poverty. But this did not deter her from her chosen path of achieving her life's goals.

Dolores commenced primary education at San Ildefonso North Central Elementary School. She was an honor student known for her dedicated learning, modest manners, supreme honesty and great respect for teachers.

Her parents, despite of poverty, somehow managed to send her to High School through Scholarship from Rotary Club of Malolos. Dolores studied College at Central Luzon State University from 1977 to 1981. She applied herself to learning with full discipline, diligence and perseverance - in the most arduous of circumstances. Her meritorious performance in High School rewarded her College Scholarships which were a welcome relief in her family’s  impoverished financial condition.

On 7th of April in 1981, she got married to Reynaldo A. Estolano, had a son, Timothy Sam Estolano on 28th of June, 1983. It was the most joyous day in the history of her life to finally see the blessing from above. Her loving husband went to rest to be with the Lord in May of 1991. He left a son and a legacy which was the relationship that they both made with the Lord.

She became a born again Christian thru her late husband and because of his faith she became what she is right now when it comes to her faith in God. Her late husband was a living example to her on what a servant of God should be.

Dolores and her son came in the US in 1991 after her husband’s passing. She was so grateful that her late husband’s family took them in temporarily while she was trying to make a living for her and her son. It wasn’t an easy life for her, being a mom and a dad to her son.

Dolores re-married after 7 years to her ex-husband Nathan Villaflor. Life taught her so many things. She didn’t give up to any hardship at all. She just cling on to God’s promises in her life.  She continued attending Bible Studies as her source of encouragement as she matured in the knowledge of the Lord.

In 23rd of August 2008, SERVANTS’ JOURNEY was born. It was through the collaboration of the 3 Marias .. Maria Dolores, Maria Vilma and Maria Filani that gave birth to this ministry.  A group of Christians from different Christian churches that meet every Friday to have fellowship, and learn more about God’s Word. Since that day on until the present, Dolores’s house is open every Friday night to all members and non-members of Servants’ Journey that needs feeding and encouragement for their spiritual growth. It is through Servants’ Journey that God pave a way to all members to meet MYRA and JOHN JALIQUE, the founders of SCHOLARS4JESUS.

Like many other Christians that grew from poverty, Dolores’s goal is for her family in the Philippines to not experience what she’d been through.  Her dream is to someday help her family out of poverty and eventually help others too. That dream came true through Scholars4Jesus. God gave her the desires of her heart. Dolores is now serving God through these 2 ministries, Servants’ Journey and Scholars4Jesus. If you want to know more about her, you can email her at cdhoyee2@gmail.com or you can access her through http://www.facebook.com/cdhoyee2

More Than Just A Name

MORE THAN JUST A NAME  by John Jalique

My finger was just inches away from the send button on my laptop; it's been hovering there for several minutes.  The thoughts running in my mind were in conflict, I was caught in a spiritual battle.

This was the night that I was applying for our website address.  After hours of brainstorming and searching the web to insure there were no other organizations with the same name, I had finally decided to go with the name that kept ringing in my mind. SCHOLARS4JESUS.

I knew that this name would immediately bring about a modern form of Christian persecution.  Why should we even bother getting a 501(c)(3) Non Profit Status to ask for grants or donations, knowing that most companies would hang us up to die once they saw the name of Jesus!  This knowledge is what kept my finger from pressing the send button.

Are you aware that our own President is claiming that we are not a Christian nation and that the Ten Commandments are being taken out of our federal buildings?  It is no longer politically correct to say Merry Christmas or send greeting cards with the nativity scene.  Our children are no longer aware of our Christian history which has blessed our nation.   Our Christian faith is under attack.

It was God who had placed a desire in my heart to help children living in extreme poverty and provide for them a means to attend school so they may have hope in Jesus Christ.   I then recalled the miracle God gave me, when He spoke to me in a still quite voice that He would provide the way if I trusted in Him.  It was then that I experienced His miracle.  God was telling me to expect the best from Him.

My fingers descended and Scholars4Jesus was born out of faith.  These children would grow knowing that they are Scholars for Jesus.  With God’s blessing we will take Scholars4Jesus from nation to nation boldly proclaiming Jesus’ name and our logo will be the cross we bear wherever God takes us.

As you read this perhaps God is speaking to you.  I know that Scholars4Jesus can only survive from the financial support through the Body of Christ.   Are you the Christian that God has prompted me to write this note to read?  I have children waiting for a miracle, praying for a chance to be someone of value.  Partner with us and let us show the world that Jesus is alive in us and in these children.

God bless you!

READ | Matthew 11:28-30

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2011:28-30&version=NKJV

Jesus invites all burdened individuals to come to Him for rest, yet so often we misunderstand what He is offering. When stresses and problems weigh us down, the most natural response is to ask God for relief: “Lord, I can’t carry this anymore. I’m going to leave it here with you.” Having dumped the burden like a bag of garbage, we walk away but remained unchanged inside.

God doesn’t operate that way. Christ’s invitation is to join Him in the yoke so you can walk and work together. He doesn’t want just your burden; He wants you! The yoke of Christ is a symbol of discipleship, characterized by submission and obedience to Him. God’s goal isn’t simply to give relief by removing a weighty trial or affliction; He longs to draw you to Himself in a close and trusting relationship. Those who take Him up on His offer will be transformed and won’t ever return to their old ways.

The process of lightening the load begins with learning to know and understand the Lord. The burden is not necessarily removed, but our thoughts and responses are changed as we begin to love Him, trust Him, believe His promises, and rely on His power. Then, as the weight of the affliction shifts from our shoulders to His, we will discover relief, although the situation may remain unchanged.

Being yoked with Christ results in rest for your soul. Life’s pressures may not lessen, but if you are intimately linked with Jesus, your soul is free from churning anxiety, and His peace is ruling in your heart. Jump into His yoke. You have nothing to lose—except your weariness—and much to gain.

Countdown to the Philippines

Constant Gratitiude

By Vilma V. Castillo - Scholars4Jesus Secretary

“O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!”(1 Chronicles 16:34, AMP)

No matter what may be happening in the world around you, you can always find something to thank God for. Gratitude is a powerful force that opens the door to God’s blessing. Having constant gratitude proves your faith in God because not only do you thank Him for what He has done in the past, you thank Him for what He will do in the future. It’s that kind of faith that pleases God. Constant gratitude also shows humility because when we are thankful, we magnify God instead of magnifying our problems. It gives us proper perspective and opens the door for God’s grace, favor and supernatural empowerment.
So what are you grateful for today? Are you grateful for the sun that shines and brings a new day? Are you thankful for the gift of eternal life? As you choose an attitude of constant gratitude, you’ll experience His mercy and loving kindness in greater ways. You’ll be filled with His peace and joy and pave the way to move forward into the abundant life He has prepared for you!

Father in heaven, thank You for another day to praise You. Thank You for all You have done in my life. Help me to see Your hand of blessing as I continually acknowledge and praise Your name. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The Place of Blessing

Jesus Peace With You

By  Vilma V. Castillo - Scholars4Jesus Secretary

“Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there”(1 Kings 17:2–4, NIV)

As a child of the Most High God, your steps are ordered by Him. He has a specific place of blessing prepared for you. When you live a life of obedience to the Word of God, He promises to supply every one of your needs. Just as God directed Elijah to his place of blessing, God is directing you, too. He’s aligning the right opportunities for you and causing the right people to come along your path to help you get ahead. He’s constantly working behind the scenes on your behalf. But you have to do your part to keep your heart open by following His Word and keeping an attitude of faith and expectancy. A major key to keeping your heart in the right place is choosing peace and unity. The Bible says that when we live in unity, there He has commanded the blessing. And when your heart is in the place of blessing, the rest of your life will be in the place of blessing, too. Today, choose peace, choose obedience and choose the place of blessing.

Heavenly Father, I come to You with a grateful heart. Thank You for leading me and directing my steps. Help me to see others the way You see them so I can honor You and live in unity all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen

Just call on God and He will embrace you with peace and comfort

Written by Jun Osorio

Cry out to God to help you. Do not rely on your own strength, but humble yourself and turn to Him. He understand your distress and you sorrow. Let Him comfort your soul and strengthen your spirit, for He sees the tears you shed when no one is looking. In time when you are too troubled to speak, just call on God and He will embrace you with peace and comfort. Always remember that God is your Rock; the Most High is your Redeemer.

Psalm 77:1-4

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm.

1 I cried out to God for help;
I cried out to God to hear me.

2 When I was in distress, I sought the Lord;

at night I stretched out untiring hands
and my soul refused to be comforted.

3 I remembered you, O God, and I groaned;

I mused, and my spirit grew faint.
Selah

4 You kept my eyes from closing;

I was too troubled to speak.

Psalm 78:35

They remembered that God was their Rock,  that God Most High was their Redeemer.

The stones that missed their target

Written by Obhet Cristobal

Aquel de ustedes que esté libre de pecado, que tire la primera piedra.1

A young woman was passionately caught in a sculpture of akarthasia, exchanging illicit vows with a stranger in the form of a collage of whispers and smiles. The room was poorly lit, and these two souls thought they had the world all by themselves, right across from where they share a guiltless act lays a lamp on a table desperately keeping its composure not to dance with the visual vibrato that its light is witnessing. And almost a glimpse of a moment before catching their last breathe for the night, the thunderous waves of footsteps from an unruly crowd banishes the dark alley of the narrow, dusty road leading to their small shanty. And before the young woman and her “friend” become aware of it, a group of scribes and Pharisees along with their apprentices where at the shanty’s doorstep. “Get her!” And before she could figure out why all eyes are on her alone, she was savaged.

One of the men who is well-built, standing more than six feet in height grabbed her by her soft petite arm, giving her no time to even pick up a piece of cloth to cover her nakedness. Another held her by her tired feet. Still another snatches the curly hair above her nape.

She was beamed from a dim-lit room to a well-lit lamp post on the public alley. With all the people shouting she did not know who to listen to, she did not know what they are grunting about but she was more than sure these people are angry at her. Why not? The young man she left was not her husband, and so is the man last night and the other night. Right now, the people started counting her faults one by one.

The only thing covering her flesh aside from her hair are her tears, still it was not enough to give her a descent clothing but its all she could do right now. She was thankful for the grainy soil that covered her knees; suddenly she noticed she was bleeding. It might be because she was banged on one of the concrete walls while being carried by the angry men, it does not matter where the bleeding came from, she can’t feel any pain at this moment.

The noise slowly subsides, as one of the Pharisees steps forward, he began to present her case to the Teacher.

Teacher, they said, This woman has been caught in the very act of adultery. Now Moses in the Law commanded us that such women shall be stoned to death. But what do You say?”2

As if this Pharisee is all knowing and with utter concern about the law, he only asked the question for one reason only; to try to find a charge on which to accuse the Teacher who came back to the temple from the Mount of Olives. With a pulsating grin, the Pharisee was expecting a buzzer beating shot that he made rendering the Teacher utterly powerless. But the Pharisee was wrong, in all his life of knowledge of the scripture, he was never right about this Teacher.

Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.3

Silence. Stones dropping down one by one on the ground, just a few inch away from each of the accuser’s feet. Until no one is holding a stone anymore. All the stones missed their target.

Who is this man?”, the young woman asked herself. “I am very sure I have sinned, but who is this man with such powerful words?, no one ever treated me this way before. No one ever sided with a filthy rag, especially in a community of the elect and religious

She has so many questions to ask herself, she did not noticed it was only her and the Teacher that is left on the once crowded court. And before she could utter one more challenge on her thoughts, she was totally silenced by the redeeming words that this kind Carpenter is about to say;

I do not condemn you, go and sin no more4

She was never this bare in front of anyone before, countless men have seen her inner most skin but this Man standing in front of her saw pass through all that, He saw her heart, He looked at her as a living soul and with the almost eternal hatred that she earned from all the people around her, she now has a sure eternal life ahead of her. She can’t wait to stand up and tell the world about Him. She knew from her heart, this is the last time that she would go in that dim-lit room again. She would stop walking in the dark and will have the Light which is life.5

I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.6

Even the seemingly most blessed and clean life has some skeletons under the closet, all of us are filthy rags no one righteous, not a single one. 7

Our failures are not fatal. 8

God’s amazing redeeming power can take tragedies and injustices in our lives and turn them into precious eternal victories. 9

A Few Hours Past Tragedy

Written by Obhet Cristobal

I just had the greatest day of my life walking out of a recent tragedy. It’s not my own though and I would clearly agree there’s no such thing as “greatest” and “tragedy” piling up on the same line. You seldom see people smiling after a great loss; you seldom share laughter with people who are supposed to be in pain.

But I am a few hours past that encounter; we just visited a friend who has just recently experienced so great a loss that the usual remuneration would be a trip to the dark corner of your room, and emptiness that would out sleep your guts, a fiery silence that would harness the greatest questions out of life.

Maybe it is just a straightforward testimony of how the grace of God is really sufficient for all of us. No matter how big the waves you are facing, no matter how loud the lion roars, nothing beats a still, silent heart in utter knowledge that “God knows”.

I remember this phrase from a book that I scanned a few hours earlier; it talks about the atrocities that Christians in China are experiencing. It holds in full account how lives are shattered because of faith. A few words from a missionary that I did not have the luxury of time to know speak something like this.

“After knowing how the Christian converts are being arrested and harassed and harmed; we just lift the burden with ease to God, and knowing that He knows we are comforted in overcoming this great tragedy”

“Lift the burden with ease to God”

It’s close to impossible right? Clearly it's grace that enables anyone to face opposition with ease, to counter chaos with silence, to render truth calmly amidst a rage of fallacy.

Praise God for the opportunity to witness grace at work in other people’s lives. How wonderful our God is, how vast is His wisdom and provision that His purpose never fails. His sovereign will defy all other life-long scientific proven truths. The One who defied gravity has done great things, more than enough, just in time.

Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?
Jeremiah 32:27

TOUCHING LIVES ONLINE (AND OFFLINE)

Almost everyday, I am sharing inspirational and radical truths through this blog. It has already been a habit at 4AM after my solitude with God and meditation of His words that I always write something here in my blog to inspire people. I consider it a tremendous blessing to touch people's lives online. But somehow God impressed upon me that I got to do more than just touch people's lives online. God impressed upon me that I can do more when I leave this chair, go out and touch people's lives in a personal and incarnate basis.

This is breaking the usual. This is getting out the comfort zone. This is going for the second mile in serving others.

5AM, I am already out. It was a long ride. I will speak to and inspire the whole security force of Rustan's, a big mall in Makati. It was a blessed experience to share the love of God to these security guards. I was thinking how we just ignore these people in many establishments and we often forgot that they too are people who need Jesus. And this was a big open door from God to introduce them to a new life. There in their gathering, I was enabled by God to share to them the radical love of Jesus. I shared to them that the Greatest Security Guard of their lives is none other than Jesus, and that every security guard must have a "Security God." Eventually, after the love of Jesus has been shared, all of them opened their hearts to Jesus and they received Him for a new relationship and salvation.

Today is another day of making this love incarnate to people. And it didn't stop there, after that, I have to go to Pandacan, Manila which is far from my place to conduct a Gospel service. It was a blessed night to share  the message of God's love to the people wherein they all received Jesus in their hearts.

For the whole week, it has been a joyous blessing to touch people's lives - counseling people, sharing the word of God in various small groups from one house to another. In one of our house session, three "gays" joined us. They thought they will not be welcomed but they were received with love. They were teary-eyed when they heard God's love for them. I know that their transformation will only start in salvation. The law cannot change them. Religion cannot save them. Only Jesus can. They accepted Jesus  in their hearts and their hearts were beaming with hope that they can have a better life with Jesus.

Somehow, I looked back this year, that God has given me this knack to reach out to selected groups of people. I remember at one early morning, our team has ministered to construction workers in one street giving them free breakfast and the Gospel. Also in another effort of love, I have ministered to suicidal "emo" students of one campus. In another engagement, we have fed and shared the gospel to tricycle drivers. God has indeed blessed this second mile of serving others.

I have realized these radical truths in going "offline" in order to do the extra-mile in serving others:
1. True happiness is when you make others happy.
2. There is always an opportunity to help people. Just go out and you will see.
3. Christianity must not be confined inside the church buildings.
4. The more you go out to help people, the less you will think of your own problems or struggles.
5. The more you see the plight of people out there, the more you will see how blessed you are.
6. And you are blessed because the blessing ought not to stop with you, it must be passed to others.
7. When you have the vision to help others, God will always give the provision.
8. Your work, your position, your office are not hindrances but ought to be avenues in helping others.

A friend of mine who is already with the Lord in heaven, told me when she was still alive and battling with cancer,  "I will not go to heaven defeated and sad. I am on my way to heaven helping other people. And if I die, I will die while helping people." I saw her victorious and enjoyed her life till her last breath.

These are thanksgiving and introspections of God's goodness in my life. To be a help is already a blessing.

And here I am again, writing these things with prayer that anyone who read this will be inspired and be blessed by God. I will keep on writing in this blog to help more people out there, but after writing a post, I will again be back in the streets and in the houses or wherever God will lead me to share His words, help and touch people's lives. It is indeed different when love becomes incarnate.

God "wrote" the Bible.
Yet, He still came down, lived with humans, and died for them.
He cannot afford to be just online and sitting on His throne.
